Last year we launched our Colerne Wildflower Patch project, asking locals to join in by giving over a small patch of their lawn to wildflowers (or tub if no lawn) in order to create a virtual Wildflower Meadow across the parish.
Amongst those taking part are Colerne CE Primary School, and each class have their own “patch”. Last spring the school children also did wonderful wildflower drawings for us on the envelopes we used to distribute the wildflower seeds - 100 were given out from our pop-up stall during two Sundays in March 2024.
More help with how and where to sew the seeds available in this FAQ.
The seeds we gave out were the bee wildflower seed mix (from 'British Wildflower Meadow Seeds' based in Somerset), carefully designed to: give quick initial results; work on a variety of types of site; give a colourful display; include annuals and perennials to provide flowers for year to come; and attract all kinds of pollinators - but bees in particular.
The seeds are from 100% native British wildflowers, sustainably harvested in the UK.
In their patches at school, the children used the seeds that had been sent out to UK primary schools in May 2024 as part of the King’s Coronation celebrations. The government-funded 'Wildflowers in Schools' scheme (carried out in collaboration with the Eden Project) was inspired by the King’s love of nature.
The 'King's Coronation seed mix' included Red and Burgundy Cornflowers, Red Poppy, Purple Tansy, Campion and Vipers Bugloss. Below you can see some of the fine results in the children's wildflower patches at Colerne CE Primary School!:
